Visible Frequencies
Visible Frequencies is an interdisciplinary performance project that transforms sound, movement, and light into a multisensory experience. Using custom-designed motion-based instruments, such as the Round Sounds created by Nick Wishart, the performance explores the concept of “visible frequencies”—making sound and motion tangible through light and colour. This work investigates the interplay between choreography, real-time motion tracking, and immersive visual effects, creating a dynamic environment where sound and movement become indistinguishable.
Nick Wishart and Skye Gellmann collaborate to create experimental performance works that seamlessly blend movement, light, video, and sound. Their creative partnership explores the boundaries of traditional performance by integrating technology and human expression in innovative ways. Central to their work is the use of Round Sounds, motion-based instruments invented by Nick Wishart to create music from motion.
Inspired by the phenomenon of synesthesia, where one sensory experience involuntarily triggers another, visible frequencies aim to make intangible elements—like sound waves or physical gestures—tangible to the eye. Technology plays a pivotal role, utilising tools such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, ultrasonic sensors, and real-time processing to translate motion and sound into dynamic visual outputs.
Audio might drive LED patterns, colour changes, or projected imagery, while sound vibrations manifest as pulsing lights or shifting colours. This fusion of sound, light, and motion culminates in immersive, multi-sensory experiences.
About the Artists
Skye Gellmann (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist who’s practice explores the limits of experimental and physical performance; with over 15 years developing what is possible with circus as an art form. Skye questions notions of circus and spectacle, having been recognised with multiple awards (including 2 Greenroom Awards) highlighting the contemporary and experimental nature of their works.
Nick Wishart is an interdisciplinary artist and musician who works with light, sound, movement, and interactivity. His Round Sounds motion instruments were designed to encourage playful interactions between musicians and physical performers such as dancers, jugglers, or anyone who loves to move.
